Today's sweet treat is Chocolate Covered Strawberries!
Now obviously strawberries are sweet and satisfying to most eaten bare, but it's fine to indulge once in a while and kick 'em up a notch!
Last summer I prepared a homemade batch of my own for a picnic and you can too! It's SO easy!
This is what I did Ingredients:
Strawberries (as many as you like, but I think 12 is a good number) Semi-sweet Chocolate chips (many varieties are vegan, you must check the label first) Powdered Sugar
All I did was take a small pot and filled it with water and let it come to a boil on the stove. Once the water was boiling, I turned down the temperature a bit and then set a bowl on top of the pot (the bowl should be able to rest on the lid of the pot but not directly touch the water).
Then I filled the bowl with about a cup or so of the chocolate chips. You will use more or less of the chocolate chips depending on how many strawberries you plan to dip. Once the chips started to melt, I began stirring consistently until all of the chips were completely melted.
Side note: For those of you who prefer not to go through the hassle of the above steps, you can, dare I say it, use a microwave to melt the chips. I do not use microwaves anymore so it is the old fashioned way for me! I'm sure I will do a blog post in the future about the use of microwaves and why I no longer choose to use them.
Once the chips were melted, I immediately began dipping. I had a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper prepared to set the strawberries on after dipping them. Be sure you pat the strawberries dry after washing them to help the chocolate to stick better. I skipped this step, but I believe it makes a difference. Once they were all dipped and on the parchment paper and the chocolate was hardened (which takes no time at all), I put some powdered sugar in a sifter and dusted the tops of the berries and voila- chocolate covered strawberries!
Now you can obviously go to the store and buy these sweet treats already prepared, but there is ALWAYS something to be said for homemade! So, try it and let me know how it goes!
One last thing to remember- to get the most out of this treat, be sure to buy strawberries and all of your fruits and veggies when they are in season. You get the most out of them when you do!
