Wouldn’t it be amazing if they invented a superfood that is not only ridiculously delicious, but contains rock star nutrients for your brain, skin, and digestive systems?
Good news! They are called blueberries!
One of the most underrated fruits has one of the highest nutrient and antioxidant counts of any fruit on the planet! They are packed with vitamins C and E, fiber, and free radical fighters. Blueberries are said to fight vision loss and certain types of cancer (like ovarian and colon). They have anti-aging properties and are a God-send for your skin. Blueberries also contain amazing amounts of fiber and tannins, which promote digestive and…eliminative…health. I think I just made up a word. But it means that they help you pee and prevent diarrhea and constipation.
But most importantly, blueberries have been found to protect the brain, possibly reducing the chances of age-related mental degradation and conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia! Why aren’t you eating them right now?!
For all you number-conscious calorie counters, 1 cup of blueberries has only 82 calories!
Blueberries are in season from May to October, although you can buy frozen blueberries all year round. They are just as nutritious, but fruit is always better and cheaper in season.
A money saving tip: Since blueberry bushes are not highly sprayed with pesticides, it is not necessary to buy them organic.
- Blend them into a smoothie with your favorite fruits and a cup of soymilk! I like bananas or frozen berries. (Tip: I also add spinach or kale to my smoothies for an extra veggie serving) - Mix them into your morning cereal. - Bake them into your whole wheat pancakes, muffins, or breads. - Spread peanut or almond butter onto whole wheat toast and sprinkle blueberries on top. - Make a parfait with berries, soy yogurt, and granola.
