"Steven the Vegan" Book Giveaway!

Posted Nov 26 2012 11:02am
Do you guys shop Vegan Cuts ? Because, if you do, you may have seen this adorable children's book make it's way through the Vegan Cuts offers that hit your inbox every day. I bought a copy for my daughter and she and I both loved it so much that I contacted the author, Dan Bodenstein, and asked him if he would be willing to give away a copy to one of my readers. He's a super nice guy and gladly offered up not one, but FIVE copies to be given away! How cool is that?!

The story begins with Steven and his classmates visiting a farm animal sanctuary on a field trip. The other kids chide Steven for eating vegetables and a peanut butter sandwich, which starts the whole ball rolling. Steven explains that he is a vegan, and he goes to each animal in turn, explaining that "bacon" comes from these cute pigs, and "hamburgers" come from these gentle cows. He also explains that many animals are herbivores themselves, and that humans do not require meat, eggs, or dairy to survive. It is a perfectly simple and non-graphic explanation of what veganism is for children. It would be a wonderful lesson for a non-vegan child, of course, but it also serves the purpose of teaching vegan children how to answer the questions, "What is a vegan?" and "Why are you vegan?"
My four-year-old daughter loves the book and recently told one of her classmates at preschool, "Chicken nuggets come from a chicken. Did you know that?"
I highly recommend this book! Try to win a copy (entering is super easy through the Rafflecopter wideget below - it takes a while to load up, so be patient) and, if you don't win one, just go ahead and click this link to purchase a copy from Amazon. This will make a great Christmas or Hanukkah gift for a child you know!

"Steven the Vegan is a children's book designed to help children explain to their friends and classmates 'Why they are vegan.' The story takes place during a school field trip to a local farm. At the farm, Steven's dietary lifestyle is revealed. He proceeds to explain to his classmates where their favorite foods come from, and why he has chosen to consider animals his friends, and not food. The illustrations bring the animals on the farm to life, and create a warm and cuddly feeling to the story. Through cheerful and colorful illustrations, Steven the Vegan helps young vegans learn what to tell friends regarding their lifestyle choice."

"Steven the Vegan was written by Dan Bodenstein , and Illustrated by Ron Robrahn . The inspiration for the book came from Dan's wife Cindy who is a vegan, and 'friend to all animals.' Through the course of the creation of the book Dan went from carnivore, to pescatarian, to vegan."
