We all know that it can be tricky to navigate holiday dishes and bevvy’s that don’t fall into your everyday lifestyle diet at this time of year. Over Christmas if you managed to zig and zag from your everyday diet that’s okay! You had fun! However, you might want to consider some of these tips to get you back on track and do a little detoxing. Here we go….
1. The first thing I like to do is return to a high daily water intake–2 to 4 liters/day– super hydrating is what it’s called and it works to flush out unwanted toxins and get your system flowing again. It also flushes fat cells if a few extra pounds are hanging about. To optimize this tip I add super greens powder to my water for at least of 50% of my daily intake. This energizes and nourishes while alkalizing to eliminate those toxins.
2. Next, I do my best to turn in early a few nights in a row giving my body some extra winks. A good nights rest is mandatory for healing while eliminating inflammation and toxins in the body. Late nights and an unhealthy diet over the holidays are a perfect recipe for illness in January. Giving your body what it needs before it tips over the edge will hopefully curb the effects depending of course on how naughty you were!
3. Supplements are another effective way to assist your body to resume it’s healthful state–replacing lost nutrients with vitamins and minerals gives your immune system a boost. I recommend a good multi-vitamin, vitamin C, B12, and my staple alkalizing mineral supplement pHor salts - this works like a charm! I don’t go a day with out this as it is the best source for 4 key minerals that keep you healthy and can make the detox much more bearable- take a read here for more details
4. Of course, I am sure to return to a lifestyle diet that is very high in vegetables. The more raw the better with 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic–I”l get to the alkaline details in a minute. Fresh green juices and smoothies are a wonderful way to ease back into healthy foods. Better yet, go 100% raw for a few days, your body will thank you!
5. Finally, I choose a weekend that I can relax at home to do a juice feast which involves 2-3 days of a diet that consists solely of fresh juiced veggie juices and lots of water. This is the optimal way to nourish and flush your body and… it’s the most invigorating way to begin the New Year. Have you done this before? Do your body a favour and give this a shot if you haven’t – it will thank you again! A complete outline with recipes for this juice feast is here.
With New Years Eve approaching it’s a good idea to do a little maintenance with a few of these tips in between celebrations. Then go easy on your self, but have fun ringing in the New Year. As soon as you can, get back to your healthy routine so you don’t fall victim to the dreaded detox symptoms that the masses will be suffering from. Essentially, the January flu is mistakenly considered to be a catchy illness that most people don’t realize is a self inflicted overload of toxic & unhealthy food intake over the holidays that surfaces in January. You can’t catch this flu AND…. it’s NOT a coincidence that many people are sick–they just totally over did it for Christmas. However, if you follow these tips you will save yourself the agony of toxic overload symptoms that go on for days and weeks for some poor souls.
But be aware, that when your body is functioning properly to eliminate toxins you will most likely have the typical cold like symptoms from a simple dripping nose with clear fluid to sneezing and some coughing that may last a couple days. This is normal and to be expected and is a good sign that your immune system is working well. Toxins choose the route to exit the body-for most it is the common cold symptoms but for some it is a break out on the skin, or via the colon in an unpleasant manner, some even end up with violent stomachs that back fire if it’s over the top! But the less you have to eliminate, the less you will suffer and the better that you are in assisting your body with this elimination with the tips above the less you will suffer, the quicker it will pass. Take notice of those around you, and observe those that indulge more than others, then check in with them in January- you won’t be surprised to find them a little under the weather for some time, walking around blaming someone for spreading the so called “bug’! Don’t worry about catching it, give them a hug, you’ll be fine, trust me–that is if you behave a little!!
It’s pretty simple, really. Essentially, the goal is to balance your body’s alkaline and acidic nature by consuming a high volume of alkaline foods and fluids.
Ideally 70 to 80% of each daily meal should be alkaline foods combined with 2-4 liters of alkalizing water with super greens in your water thru the day. The 70-80% portion for alkaline foods is basically vegetables, mostly raw-some warmed and some either whole or juiced as well as low sugar fruits. The 20%-30% balance is acidic foods that are made up of raw or cooked foods such as whole grains, seeds, nuts, legumes, proteins-plant or animal-preferably organic turkey or chicken and the sweeter fruits. Some alkavorians do consume a little tiny bit of dairy and eggs, many do not. The least processed food possible or none at all, is key. In a nut shell, one could easily transition to this lifestyle diet just by increasing their raw greens or gently warmed veggies to 70-80% on your plate at lunch and dinner and adding fresh veggie juice in the morning. This is doable, don’t you think?
An Alkaline balanced body is healthy, vibrant, and energetic, free of sickness and disease. It’s how our body was designed to function.
Wouldn’t you want to feel like this? Conversely, an Acidic body is one that is degenerating, breaking down, showing many, many symptoms of ill health from the simplest form being a cold or a rash to more serious concerns such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. We all know 1-5 people or more that are ill or dying of these or many other terrible diseases that can be solved with a change in their lifestyle and diet. High levels of stress, negative thoughts, lack of exercise and poor shallow breathing (which most of us do all day long) all play a key role in this lifestyle and are acid forming. Changing your diet will certainly improve your pH and reduce your symptoms. However, it is important to note that one might reach a certain plateau in their alkaline health journey, and then need to manage and balance these other pieces of the puzzle to reach optimal health. A balanced alkaline diet is key but a complete healthy lifestyle is the ultimate.
What I find to be the most amazing thing about the alkaline lifestyle is that it’s measurable because it IS a science. A live blood analysis is the measuring device. If you have your live blood analysis done you will see the nasty business going on in there. This is done by a trained microscopist who can show you the state of your bodies health by the organisms that are surviving in your blood from yeast, to parasites, (we all have them to some degree if you eat meat), stress indicators, pre-cancerous crystals, and many other unhealthy organisms or tell tale signs of symptoms you probably have that are identified with specific organisms floating around in your blood that traditional lab tests don’t pick up. Amazing, don’t you think? With traditional lab tests most of the time we are left guessing or given too wide of a range for a blood screen to fall within giving inconclusive or generalized results–then handed a highly acidic causing prescription drug with a hope and a prayer! Live blood analysis shows how your blood has changed or how unhealthy organisms have disappeared from one session to the next one, right on the computer screen, with only a 30 day diet adjustment and further more with healthy lifestyle improvements. Healthy blood is mandatory for a healthy body-no ifs, ands, buts, or maybees!
If you want to take this measuring stick of your health to the next level, I also recommend a hair analysis, say every 6-12 months, which is phenomenal, for indicating your bodies current mineral make up, and how to supplement correctly–this is how DNA is measured so it’s very precise! Knowing your mineral levels offers information for balancing and ensuring proper absorption making it possible to target problem areas with precision and results. Together these are fool proof, non-invasive ways of seeing inside your body to determine a) where you are, b) what to correct and c) how well you’ve done. No more doctors for me!!-unless of course I break a leg-God forbid- crutches are a real bummer!
The best way to alkalize daily is to have a nice collection of tasty recipes that you enjoy. You can also adjust some of your favourites to reduce the acidic effect on the body or to make the recipe more alkaline. Here you can see a few of the yummy healthy alkaline friendly options that I have created since I began my blog early this year and many more on my site at http://www.alkalinesisters.com/
Reworking your pantry with healthy groceries like I did here and eliminating most of the naughty processed foods makes it easier to choose healthy when you are hungry. If the acidic forming food isn’t in the house you won’t fall victim to it. My passion is to create recipes so it is easier for you to adapt the lifestyle and with some practice you will easily be adjusting recipes like a pro.
What I did was….. eliminate dairy, meat(this is optional), highly processed foods, add in lots alkaline water, tons of greens via smoothies, daily juicing, salads with lots of raw and some lightly cooked veggies. This may seem extreme to some but this lifestyle is your ticket to longevity and energy. Everything you eat affects your body positively or negatively, acidic or alkaline.
There’s no doubt about it, change what you eat and the way you live to more alkaline choices and your symptoms will diminish and slowly disappear. I am living proof and so are many others who have even reversed cancer and are living a vibrant life, well into their late nineties with very little degeneration. For further reading I recommend picking up a soft cover copy for under $10 of The pH Miracle by Dr. Robert O. Young. I challenge you to try it for 30 days and see how much you like the gain of energy and the positive changes that happen. A food chart to help guide you, showing the value of alkalinity or acidity, is right here . Good luck and a “green juice cheer” to a healthy New Year!
