I have two new fascinations, and that is wheat grass juice and hemp seeds. The juice will be another post, but for now I want to share how you can use hemp seeds in your diet. No, I'm not growing plants or any of that. Why smoke when you can eat? These seeds are so amazing. If I'm getting high at all it's on health! If you can't get these seeds in your country then don't go away yet...
Checking on the web it looks like the seeds are not legal in the States. In Canada it is. But I think Americans can buy hemp milk?
If newest research shows that dairy and meat has turned our Western diet into a big problem, then we all turn to soya as our alternative. But one doesn't always have to grab for the soya milk. I believe that hemp and nut milks will become popular in the future like now soy milk is. Vegetarians and vegans who want to make the best of their diet, should go for variety in different foods and drinks. I found out that it's not so hard to do this and also very practical.
Minerals, protein, omega's, anti-oxidants, essential amino acids and more. It's also supposed to be good for your heart. If you are into sports or a body builder, then you can use hemp which is a better alternative to using meat for protein and minerals: http://www.hempforbodybuilding.com/
One of the things I made with the seeds are hemp bars. But you can also make the bars without the hemp of course if you can't get it in your country.
I've also been making hemp milk. Place some hemp seeds in the food processor with a little water and mix. It's amazing how you end up with a white milk! Then I add some more water until it is as thin as I want it. I like to add banana for a super hemp shake! You can sweeten the milk or add any fruit or fruit juice out of a bottle. My son loves these shakes and he gets one every day now.
The taste of plain hemp milk is maybe something to get used to, but I'm growing to like it. It reminds me a bit of cucumber, and in the summer I will surely add cucumbers to the juice! The milk is fresh. I also add cocoa and syrup for the kids, but Frank and I prefer the milk with fruit or vegetables.
Hemp is so valuable for children! With my blender it takes a minute or two until I obtain a milk. Also you'll need to pour the liquid through a fine meshed sieve, or better is to use one of those special cloth bags for straining the milk. You can also use a cloth tea strainer usually used for making herbal tea's.
Growing hemp sprouts is another thing that you can do with the seeds. I mix them in with my usual alfalfa and other sprouts. See my post on growing spouts if you want to try this out.
So how much is all this going to cost, you ask? A box of soy milk is not so cheap if you add up all the costs. What I have now is a box of hemp seeds of 500 g which cost me 3,80 euro's. I can go a very long way with this amount. Also important is to get organic hemp. You can read about that on the web.
More expensive were the ready to use hemp seeds (soft hulled seeds) which I bought at my local health food store. These can be used on cereals, meals and like I mentioned already, you can make your own hemp bars. Really wonderful and tasty seeds! The package is well sealed and in the fridge now. I'll be showing how to make hemp bars in one of my next posts.
I'm really not much of a writer, but I hope this post has brought some inspiration!
