For the dogs

Posted Oct 26 2009 11:06pm
Another Tuesday, another day of baking. I'm exhausted but exceedingly happy with my efforts. I'll share the people treats a little later on, but first I thought I'd show you a recipe I came up with for Suzie, my 13 year old cocker spaniel/poodle/old lady/garbage breath. These cookies are full of protein and fibre, and if you can find unsweetened carob, they're also sugar free.

Double carob peanut cookies (for dogs)

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup chick pea (besan/gram) flour
1/2 cup self raising flour
1/4 cup carob powder
2 tbs sugar-free carob, chopped into small chunks
2 tbs raw, unsalted peanuts, chopped
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbs oil (flax seed, olive, sunflower)
1 tbs ground flax seeds mixed with 6 tbs warm water

Preheat the oven to 180C and line a baking tray. In a large bowl combine all the ingredients to form a smooth dough. If it's too dry add a bit more water. Roll dough into balls (teaspoon sized for small dogs, tablespoon for medium to large. ) and place on tray. Flatten to form discs and bake for 15 - 20 minutes. The longer you bake them for the crunchier they'll get. Store in an airtight container, and feed to your dog sparingly, as a special treat.

You can use 2 tablespoons of peanut butter in place of the oil and chopped peanuts.
