Two minutes---that was the difference between first and second place at the 2009 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
But it was more than enough time for 36-year-old Australian Craig Alexander to savor his victory over Californian Chris Lieto.
Alexander, who won his second straight Ironman World Championship, spent much of the day chasing Lieto and it was not until the run part of the race that Alexander' s faster marathon made the difference between first and second place.
" I wanted to come up with a worthy defense of my crown," Alexander said.
Lieto said that he tried to run faster but his legs just wound not go any quicker in the Hawaiian heat:
" I gave it my best and I just tried to hang on as hard as I could," he said.
Alexander won a prize of $110,000 for his first place finish.
