Video: Aaron Peirsol sets new world record in 100 meter backstroke and first ever to go under 52 seconds

Peirsol 51.94 seconds is such a terribly short amount of time in anybody's life but for American swimmer Aaron Peirsol it's probably the most important 51.94 seconds of his life.

The Californian sealed the deal and clinched his place on the Rome bound World Championship U.S. team in Indiana when he set a new world record in the 100 meter backstroke.

"It was a beautiful race," Peirsol told the USA Swimming Web site. "I knew I could do something special tonight. I'm a little speechless. I've said it before: anyone can win a gold medal or set a world record at any time. There's something to be said for consistency."
