Triple Ironman athlete and buddy to row across the Atlantic Ocean naked for charity

Posted Jul 01 2009 9:01pm

Row So in the world of Ultra endurance sports racing a triple Ironman is probably pretty much par for the course if you are a serious ultra endurance athlete.

And even rowing a boat across 2500 miles of open Atlantic ocean might not seem like such a completely crazy hard day (or months as it will most likely be) at the office.

But to row that boat stark naked almost the entire way---well that's something that even might raise and eyebrow or two of the most Ultra of Ultra athletes.

But never-the-less that's the plan that Rich Hume, 27, and Tom Barnes, 30 of London will pursue later this year in an attempt to raise money for charity Ataxia UK.

And before you get too deep into the rationale for the naked ultra row, the boys from London say they "will spend most of their time totally naked to cut down on chafing caused by clothes rubbing against skin in the corrosive salt water."

According to communitynewswire.com:

"Rich Hume, 27, and Tom Barnes, 30, will take part in the The Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canary Islands to Antigua, a distance of 2,500 nautical miles. They will set off in November and spend more than two months at sea, in a boat the size of a mini-bus.

Barnes resident Rich, and Tom, from Addlestone, Surrey, are both good friends with James Downie, 27, who has ataxia, an incurable neurological condition that has left him in a wheelchair. They hope to raise at least £100,000 to fund vital services and research into the condition."

"By taking on this massive challenge we hope to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for the condition. Crossing the Atlantic is a lifelong dream of mine, and I'm so pleased we can do this in aid of Ataxia UK," Barnes said.

Hume is a personal trainer and was ranked among the top ten in the world at the Triple Iron Man triathlon race in 2008.
