Last week
my coach had me swim a 1000 yard/meter time trial so that she would have a starting point in providing meaningful workouts to help me become a bit faster. She also asked if I could send her a recent swim video.
Upon seeing my video her first comment was Holy Bat Kick! Yeah, it was that bad. And although enthusiasm can go a long ways towards success in life, my enthusiasm in my kicking seems to have served more as a boat anchor when it comes to my swimming.
So after a day or so of mental self flagellation concerning my swimming shortcomings, I am once again pulling myself up by my bootstraps and am generating a full court press in an effort to rectify my pitiful swim technique.
My first step was to sign up for a new masters swim session. We lost our coach at the previous session I was attending, and while he graciously emails our workouts each week, for me at least, completing those workouts does little to rectify my technique shortcomings.
I attended my first masters session on Sunday. And after a couple of laps wouldn’t you know it – the coach immediately zeroed in my kicking issues. For the next hour I swam up and down the 50 meter outdoor pool performing drills.
I am headed back there again this evening for session number two and continue to once again remain the optimist that even a clumsy dork like me can become a bit more graceful and tube like. And who knows – perhaps someday I will slide through the water rather than plowing through it like an overpowered, less than streamlined oil tanker.
And I have also come to grips with the fact that swimming technique and drills are forever if one want to get better or at least remain at a higher level.
Thank you for reading.
