I forced myself to take two-days off from running for a little preventative medicine and it seems to have done the trick. Last weekend at around mile 15 of my 18-miler something wasn’t feeling quite right on the outside lower-left leg. I thought it was just from running 18-miles in mud and some rocks and some icy patches and just ran. Then I thought maybe it was the new GT-2140's that I had gotten just 3-days prior to the ong run, but I checked and there were no structural changes made from the GT-2130's I'd been wearing. That afternoon the area was a bit sore but not too bad. I next ran on Monday and it wasn’t nearly like it was, but I could still tell something wasn’t quite 100%...but I ran anyway. Go figure. Then on Tuesday I ran again and it felt worse…but I ran anyway like a dumb-ass. That evening relaxing with my wife I was hurting anytime I flexed my foot back but it wasn’t on the front where the bone is (no shin-splints) nor was it in the ankle. It was just a strange muscle pain. So I started popping the Advil and Aleve and forced myself to take two days off of running. And that seems to have done the trick! I ran today and it felt fine. But before I tell you about that run, here are recaps of what I did prior to today’s run…
Tuesday I ran as previously mentioned and held my target pace (sub-7:45/m on the hills) but it wasn’t the most comfortable run outings. It was bad enough that about 2/3’s the way through I noticed that I had changed my gait and that is NEVER a good thing to run through. I did get it done, however. That evening I climbed on the bike trainer for a session and bike riding (and swimming) didn’t hurt that area. So spin I did in the big-gear with some standing intervals included. Stats for Tuesday’s run: 7.2-miles in 55:04 @ 7:38/m pace. Stats for Tuesday’s bike: 17.6-miles in 1-hour.
Wednesday I took a complete rest day, but I couldn’t do that two days in a row so on Thursday I hit the pool at o’dark-thirty for a swim. It was a fairly long distance splash around and I worked hard on form. I was also to do each interval faster than the one before and I love it when that happens! Stats for Thursday’s swim: 3,000-yards in 59:49 (1:02:19 w/rest) 6x500 w/30-sec. rests.
This morning I was in the pool once again at 5:00am for a medium-long swim. I kept the interval distances the same as Thursday, did one less, and pushed them all a bit harder. And the final one was the fastest one of both days! Schwing! And that brings me to today’s run which I was nervous about. But other than the legs feeling a bit tired just in general it went very well. I kept the pace very easy for most of it and felt good towards the end to push it a bit on the hills back to the office. All in all it was wonderful to be back at it and there is no pain whatsoever! Stats for Friday’s swim: 2,500-yards in 48:27 (50:27 w/rest) 5x500 w/30-sec. rests. Stats for Friday’s run: 8.2-miles in 1:04:33 @ 7:52/m pace.
Tomorrow I’m going to head outside for my first long, outdoor ride of the year. I’m meeting up with several of my Ironheads teammates for a ride up, over, and around Bald Peak that will give us ~3,000-ft. of climbing in ~60-miles for ~3.5-4-hours. Looks like the rain will let up for a window of time for us to get our ride in, but the temps will be in the 30’s for most of it. But it will be awesome to get the hell off the trainer for a change! Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend…
