Somnio Running Shoes Nada Product Review

Posted Mar 14 2011 9:46am

Last fall I was lucky enough to get a pair of the Somnio Westridge Trail Shoes to try out. Recently, Somnio Running sent me a pair of the Nadas, which is their entry into the more minimalist shoe market that is growing leaps and bounds. A supplemental training shoe that is meant for strengthening, tuning and stretching, the Nada is designed for a runner who wants to incorporate barefoot methodology into their routine. Wharton Performance guided DVD included. Phil Wharton is a world-renowned musculoskeletal therapist and stretching guru who works with Olympic caliber athletes and everyday athletes alike. He developed the NADA training DVD to help lead runners through strengthening exercises and form drills in order to help make a safe and pain-free transition into minimalist running.

Fit

* Warning: The Nada runs very big! Order the Nada ONE FULL SIZE SMALLER than your typical running shoes. -- My only complaint with the Westridge Trail Shoe was that it seemed to run about half a size too small, but Somnio went the other direction with the Nada, and it indeed runs large, as I received a half size smaller than typical and, while extremely comfortable, I might be able to go a half size smaller, though I don't feel it's necessary. Also, unlike other Somnio Running shoes, the Nada is not adjustable to the individual user.

The Nada features:

  • Fully bonded upper for seamless comfort
  • Breathable stretch mesh upper with (Thermo Polyurethane) overlays
allows the shoe to move with the foot and accommodates a wide
    variety of foot shapes
  • Ultra thin 6mm midsole for protection
  • Zero heel to midsole drop for a natural foot position
  • 3.5oz (100g) in women’s size US 8 for ultra light weight
  • Asymmetric lacing system
  • Heel and forefoot roadblock rubber
  • Specific last with wider toe box
Overall Impressions

First off, the Nada is even more cool looking in person than in the pictures, if you can believe it - even my extra large feet look sleek and speedy. And then you put them on - Wow. These shoes are incredibly light, lighter than most pairs of your socks, I would guess. The most apt description that comes to mind is a slipper with a suggestion of a sole, laced to fit snugly and comfortably on your foot. Now I'm a big guy, 6', 200 pounds, and though initially I was fearful to run in these shoes for more than short stretches, I will definitely incorporate them into my running routine.
