Running hard and getting nowhere…

Posted Jan 11 2009 5:39pm
In ten years of being a runner and triathlete up until this week I could count the number of treadmill runs I’ve been forced to do on one hand. But not anymore thanks to Mother Nature and her bitchiness this week. I’ve had an entire week of running on the dreadmill, felling like a hamster on a wheel, and longing to be outside. We’ve had an entire week of snow, ice, temps in the teens and twenties, and no break from it. In fact, for my first time EVER I have to do a long-run indoors on the dreadmill tomorrow and not only is it a long-run, but it is a 17 mile long-run. Indoors, going nowhere, and sweating like a pig. But, with a race coming up in two weeks I don’t want to miss my last hardcore session so indoors I’ll run, hating it, but getting it done. So, here is a recap of the week…

Last Saturday was the last time I got to get my run on outdoors and I ran that one with my daughter around the ‘hood. It was cold and raining, but we kept it easy and chatted along the way.
Stats for Saturday’s run: 12-miles in 1:45:46 @ 8:48/m pace.

Sunday I hit the bike trainer for a medium-length steady-state session while watching the Seahawks lose…again.
Stats for Sunday’s bike: 34.8-miles in 2-hours @ 17.4-mph.

Monday was the first of a week’s worth of treadmill hamster style running. I started out easy and then actually did some interval work so I could still get in some speedwork. Later that evening I hit the bike trainer again and this time did some big-gear seated intervals.
Stats for Monday’s run: 6.2-miles in 44:44 @ 7:12/m pace.
Stats for Monday’s bike: 16.6-miles in 1-hour.

Tuesday was another spinning belt run and this time it was easy run day at a nice steady pace. I watched the Price is Right.
Stats for Tuesday’s run: 6.2-miles in 45:35 @ 7:30/m pace.

Wednesday was speedwork session #2 for the week and once again it was done at the club on the belt that goes around and around. I ran an easy mile then alternated miles at 6:31 and 6:00 pacing until I got to mile 6 then back it off for the last .2.
Stats for Wednesday’s run: 6.2-miles in 40:57 @ 6:36/m pace.

Thursday was a bit longer treadmill run, but done at an easier and steadier pace with no interval work. I watched The Price Is Right again. That Drew Carey cracks me up. Later that evening I once again got on the bike trainer and did another big-gear session alternating seated and standing intervals.
Stats for Thursday’s run: 8-miles in 59:19 @ 7:24/m pace.
Stats for Thursday’s bike: 17.4-miles in 1-hour.

And lastly, today my beautiful wife and I headed up to the club once more during yet another snow storm (we love the Outback!) and got our respective workouts done. Today was another steady-state run for me with a very easy first and last mile.
Stats for Friday’s run: 6.2-miles in 47:43 @ 7:41/m pace.

We are supposed to get six more inches of snow, high-winds, then an ice storm over the next 36-48 hours. Oh joy. It will be nasty outside, but as long as the club has power and I can make that belt go ‘round and ‘round for a couple of hours then all will be right.

Thanks for stopping by and have a nice weekend…
