2008 Olympian Matt Reed won the Ironman California 70.3 on the run and set a new course record at 1:11:15. The women's race was tight with the top three women separated by just under a minute but at the line the victory went to Mirinda Carfrae of Australia, who also broke the run course record wth a time of 1:20:22.
According to Duathlon.com:
"Defending champion Andy Potts led the men out of the water with a race
record swim split. Many favorites came out about a minute later.
Eventual winner Reed experienced difficulties in the swim and uncharacteristically emerged from the water over 2 minutes behind Potts.
On the bike, Bjorn Anderson took the lead which he maintained
throughout the ride. Many favorites came into T2 within a few minutes
of Anderson. Once on the run, Reed took control and his race best run
culminated an outstanding performance. In the women's race, eventual
runner up Sarah Groff was near the front much of the day, with the
fastest swim and coming into T2 with the leading group. Groff would
stay out front until the last mile when Carfrae passed for the win in
the midst of a race best half marathon of 1:20:22."
