Quick Weekend/Race/Weekly/IMAz/ITU/Etc Report

Posted Aug 28 2009 8:20pm
Last week report...good training. Hard swimming. Hard biking. Hard running. 18-20 hours total depending on if you count dryland activity like weights and mobility/stretching.

Cactus Challenge race report...Last minute Friday decision to race. I felt like a good blow-out effort would be what I needed before Wildflower. Off course a little into the sun on the swim. 1st out of the water thanks to some serious off course swimming by an ex-UT swimmer. Held the lead through about the first 10 miles of the bike before Todd 'The Buffalo' Gerlach passed me. Gave all I could to keep him in sight over the next 16 miles. Success. Started the run about 20 seconds down. Passed Todd at mile 1. Held on and ran sub 18 for second 5k hilly cross country loop of the run. 1st overall in the elite field somewhere around 2:01 for a long T1 run, 26 mile bike olympic distance race. Todd was 2nd. James J$$ Mr. Cotter was 3rd. Desiree won the women's race. Jack Cartwright won the non-elite race. Avery Visser won the women's sprint.

Shout outs to a few Austinites at IMAz...apologies to the many that I have left out. James Bonney, 7th in the men's field...good to see James back in form. Terra Castro, 7th in the women's field...5th female pro I believe. Julie Fiocca, one of the top age groupers nipping at the heels of the pros. Lisa Preeg...appears to have won her age group in a stellar 11:08 or so. Ex-Austinite Michael Lovato, the 2006 IMAz champ, was 3rd overall.

ITU Ishigaki. Forgettable day for the Americans for the most part. Jarrod Shoemaker was our standout with a very respectable 10th place finish. Looked like he ran himself to 10th with one of the day's fastest run splits, if not the fastest run split.

The Schlotsky's bun run, the official World Championship of Austin 5k. Lance Parker nipped Gilbert's cuz Bernard for the win. Congrats Lance.
