Product review: Bubbly Hydration from GU

Posted Mar 08 2011 1:00pm

The mysterious package that arrived in the mail contained a plain white plastic tube … it looked suspicious, but the accompanying letter explained it all. I had been chosen, along with 26 other athletes on the planet, to preview a new secret weapon from the labs of GU Energy Products. The GU wizards, known for their gels, chomps and liquids, had decided to create a new electrolyte tablet.

Known henceforth as GU Brew Electrolyte Tablets, these little compact discs are supposed to make it easy for athletes to maintain electrolyte levels on those long workouts or events by carrying a few tablets instead of powders or additional mixed bottles. Simply pop your GU Brew tab into whatever bottle you want, at whatever stage of the workout you choose and hey-presto; you get an instant hit of sodium (320mg) and potassium (55mg).
I sampled the new product during a recent workout. It dissolved pretty fast in my water bottle and tasted a lot little like thoseVitamin C effervescents we see advertised on TV so much nowadays.  It’s very palatable and easy to swallow. As for its efficacy, I can’t really tell and will have to leave that up the lab rats to figure out. I did have a good run though!
This is a neat idea from a company that makes some really great energy products. The GU Brew Electrolyte tablets will be available instores later this month and will cost $6.50 per 12 serving tube. Flavors available are; Orange, Lemon Lime, Peach Tea.
