Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya won the London marathon in a new course record time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 10 seconds in sunny and still conditions.
He was followed by Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia, who finished 10 seconds behind in second.
Jaouad Gharib of Morocco, second at last year' s Olympics, was third in
2:05:27.
According to the Associated Press:
"Defending champion Martin Lel withdrew Saturday after
failing to recover from a hip injury, ending his bid to become the
first man to win the London race four times."
On the women' s side Irina Mikitenko of Germany won for a secod year in a row in a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 11 seconds.

"Mara Yamauchi of Britain crossed the finish line at
Buckingham Palace 61 seconds behind in a career-best performance.
Liliya Shobukova of Russia was third in 2:24:24.
