O'Donnell and Cave win the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 in Orlando

5430Tri-0202 May 16, 2010 (Orlando, Fla.) -- American Timothy O'Donnell and Great Britain's Leanda Cave captured wins at the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida, which took place today at Walt Disney World Resort's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds. O'Donnell, a multiple-Ironman 70.3 champion, finished with an overall time of 3:51:18 while defending champion Cave crossed the line in 4:14:22.

Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida offered a $30,000 professional prize purse and 75 slots to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, Presented by Ford, taking place on November 13 in one of the world's top beach destinations, Clearwater, Fla.

A highly competitive men's field today consisted of the top five finishers listed below as well as New Zealand's Bryan Rhodes and American TJ Tollakson. Exiting the water in first was David Kahn, known as a strong swimmer, followed closely by O'Donnell and defending champion Dirk Bockel.

Tollakson held a strong lead throughout the bike, entering T2 more than seven minutes ahead of Bockel, Australian Richie Cunningham and O'Donnell. At mile 8 of the run, O'Donnell moved in front and ended the day in first, setting the course's second-best time. Viktor Zyemtsev was tenth off the bike, but the fastest run split of the day, 1:13:53, propelled him to a second-place finish.

Cave also saw competition with a strong women's field including multiple-Ironman champion Nina Kraft and American Kim Loeffler. Sara McLarty was first out of the water and although she entered T2 in the lead, she was quickly overtaken by American Amanda Stevens. Soon after, Cave pushed to the front, where she stayed until the finish. Her 1:26:29 half marathon allowed her to best her 2009 winning time to set a new course record.

Participants in today's event ranged in age from 19 to 72 years old and represented nearly all 50 states and more than 30 countries, including approximately 840 athletes from the state of Florida. A variety of inspirational athletes raced, to include three injured military personnel and first responders as part of Team Operation Rebound Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida. Charlie Plaskon, of Moriches, NY, a visually impaired athlete who has participated in the event every year since its inception, finished in 6:20:08.

Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida, with more than 2,200 competitors at the start line, saw clear conditions at the start and water temperature at 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Finishers were greeted with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to high 80s.
