Marathon World record holder to headline pro field at New York City Marathon

Posted Nov 06 2010 10:16am

He's from Ethiopia and he holds the record for the fastest marathon ever run, and he also happens to be running the 2010 New York City marathon.

Haile Gebrselassie ran the 26. 2 miles of the marathon distance in Berlin in 2008 in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 59 seconds....making his the fastest marathon runner of all time.

Now he's set his sights on the New York City Marathon.

"I planned this for many years. If you run the marathon, how can you stop running without running New York?," Gebrselassie told a news conference on Friday.

But for this year's New York race Gebrselassie says it is not about running for a new record.

"It's not the one you run for time," Gebrselassie said. "It's the one you run to win."

On the women's side of the race defending champ Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia is back again to race for the win.

"Thank you for having remembered me from all those years ago," the reigning New York City Marathon champion said.

According to USA Today :

"She was a bit of a forgotten woman at her sport's biggest events before the victory in 2009 that surprised even Tulu. Now 38, she sees no reason she can't defend her title at Sunday's race and keep competing at the highest level."

"You just have to have patience and treat it and trust that you will return," Tulu said through a translator Thursday. "I always have hope that I will recover and return to my peak."
