There are a number of exercises that experts tell us are absolutely necessary for total fitness. Lunges are one of those exercises. Somehow, through the years, I have missed/avoided/neglected this particular exercise.
Until last week anyway. I first gave them a try early last week when I was on my bike trainer, following Spinervals 11.0 Big Gear Strength. As I wrote in my last post, this DVD has us jump off the bike at about the half way point and perform some lunges. So I dutifully followed instructions and did my lunges.
The next day was my weight training day and I decided that the best place to add these exercises would be in my twice weekly visit to my weights down in my basement. This time I performed my lunges while holding some light dumbbells.
The next day I woke up with genuine soreness in portions of the back of my legs. And just by coincidence the source of this pain seemed to be in the exact location where I sometimes start aching a bit towards the end of my long runs.
Well that convinced me. I have once again found a bit of weakness in this old body, and will be lunging regularly to strengthen and rectify this deficiency.
