Los Angeles Marathon results plus winner runs away with record time and $160,000

Posted May 30 2009 10:11pm

Lamarathon Wesley Korir of Kenya had a lot to cry about when he won the Los Angeles Marathon in a record time of 2 hours 8 minutes 24 seconds.

In the process of winning the professional race he takes home a brand new 2009 Honda Accord EX-L, along with $160,000 in prize money--making his winning one of the richest single day marathon hauls in the world.

"At the start of the race," Korir said, "I thought my chance of winning was zero."

According to the Los Angeles Times:

"After receiving some encouragement from countryman Laban Kipkemboi, Korir, 26, pulled away from race favorite Tariku Jufar of Ethiopia on Olympic Boulevard in the 24th mile.

"I told him, 'If you are still strong, keep pushing because you can break the course record,' " Kipkemboi said.

Jufar finished second in 2:09:32 and Kipkemboi was third in 2:10:29 on a day runners collected $138,000 in time bonuses."

On the women's side it was Tatiana Petrova of Russia who won the women's race in a time 2:25:29. The Los Angeles marathon features an unusual staggered start that allows for head to head running among the women and the men.

To make the racing more interesting the women get a head start and the men must catch them to collect additional race bonuses.

The amateur race results are now available online HERE.
