Long Ride = Sunburn

Posted Jun 10 2009 12:18am

So rolled out of Bikemart at 8:10 for the 8:10 36, to then loop on Los Rios to ride the 9:10 36, then go off with Tricia and David for some more miles. Tricia and I were thinking 70-75 miles sounds good. The ride was almost 90 when we rolled back into Bikemart around 2pm.

The 8:10 was good, we rolled at a nice consistent pace. We had a little bit of a headwind going down Renner towards Los Rios, but since I was in everyones draft I just rolled. Once onto Los Rios I was hoping not get dropped and didn't until we hit some downhills. Once the hills were hit I had to sprint for my life to catch up to the pack and stuck on them the rest of the 8:10 36. Only a few of us then looped around with the 9:10 36, while the rest went on back to store. I got dropped alot on the 9:10 but always managed to get myself back into the pack somehow. The average speed was awfully high once we hit Renner again and I was thinking no way can I have a good rest of the long ride. Tricia, David and I headed out towards Sachse and got some good hills in before heading back. Since I never ride in what seems to be endless fiels of nothing on both sides in such a long time, I forgot how nice it is to get away from the city roads and traffic. After looping through Sachse we headed toward Renner and were on our way home... or so I thought! We ended up doing a few loops where we got to climb some hills we had hit and hills we hadn't hit earlier in the day. The last few miles were the toughest. Though my food and fluid intake was exactly what I wanted it to be like... I wasn't feeling to well and just wanted to be done... period. The ride was just short of 90 miles and our average from start to end was around 18.7 or somewhere around there. Overall a good training ride mileage wise.

Though my nutrition was right on target and no bonking occured there was one thing I learned from the ride today... apply sunscreen even on a somewhat cloudy and not so hot day, espcially when wearing a sleeveless jersey. My back is burned and ouch it hurts... bad!

More to come...
