The official announcement of a new Ironman race by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) to be held in Utah in May of 2010 is scheduled for early March of this year according to St. George Assistant City Manager Marc Mortensen.
Mortensen said he could not go into precise details of the new Ironman race because of contractual agreements with the WTC, but he did confirm that the contract to host the race is with Washington County, and that the city of St. George will also play host to the race.
He went on to confirm that the city of St. George' s legal department has approved the agreement for the race which is " for five years. The event will be held the first Saturday of May each year and is also
being sponsored by Washington County and the Utah Sports Commission."
This according to the December to the of St. George city council minutes.
In an exclusive story first reported here, "The race will be a qualifier for the big one in Hawaii," said St. George City manager Gary Esplin.
The swim will take place in Sand Hollow and the bike portion of the
race will go through the town of Gunlock, according to Esplin.
The run portion of the Ironman will finish in the city center of St. George.
St. George is in Washington County, Utah and has a population of about seventy five thousand residents.
The city is located in the Southwest corner of Utah next to Zion National Park.
The city is also home to the St. George Marathon which is scheduled to take place in October of this year.
