High

Posted Feb 11 2009 3:25pm
I really miss getting high. I miss that feeling of euphoria and lightness as I glide across the planet, slicing through the atmosphere with a level of consciousness piercing into imaginative places beyond the mortal boundaries of day to day living.

It has been months and months since I have been high. In actual count the last time I was high was in late September of last year.

Yes, I truly miss my all too infrequent runner’s high. And while my runs are sometimes painful, frequently enjoyable and every now and then absolutely spectacular, these runs over the past several months have been a process of putting one foot in front of the other as I attempt to gain some semblance of the fitness levels I had prior to the Portland Marathon and my subsequent hospital visit.

I am slowly ramping up the distance and speed through a variety of runs involving quicker sessions, hill work and the requisite weekly long run that is slowly increasing in distance. And every couple of weeks I find the need to back off and rest these old bones, before I move forward once again.

But during these past several months the runner’s high has definitely been missing. I feel like I have almost touched it on some of my bike trainer rides as I zone out and follow Coach Troy’s instructions. But I am not quite there on the bike, and feel like I am a long ways away on the run. And of course the swim makes any potential high a challenging goal with the need to continually concentrate on my lap counts.

However, we have almost reached the mid point of February and winter is closer to the end than the beginning. And contrary to what the groundhog says, nicer, warmer weather is around the corner, and I am hopeful that I will someday soon reach that runner’s high once again.

And until then, I will continue to plug along and pound the pavement.

Because that is what I am and what I do.

Thank you for visiting.
