COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Hammerhead Triathlon Club of Jacksonville, Fla., combined for over 132,000 weighted training miles over a three-month stretch to outdistance more than 80 clubs that participated in USA Triathlon's National Challenge Competition.
Designed to get triathletes excited about offseason training at the club level, the National Challenge Competition features official USA Triathlon clubs from across the country going head-to-head to see who could log the most training miles during the competition. The 84 clubs and 2,240 athletes that participated combined to tally 1,000,770 weighted training miles from Dec. 1, 2010, through Feb. 28, 2011.
The NCC featured three sessions, each one month in duration. Clubs recorded their training miles and submitted them on the NCC website for automatic calculation and ranking. Mileage totals were weighted with each swimming mile equaling 10 miles and each running mile equaling three miles. Cycling miles were not weighted.
After finishing third in the overall standings a year ago, Hammerhead Triathlon Club totaled 132,260.09 weighted miles this year to earn the overall and Division I titles. Division III winner Team Fraser Multisport of Fraser, Mich., was second overall with 114,035.34 miles, and Alaska Tri Club White Wabid Wabbits of Anchorage, Alaska, was third with 86,300.38.
The overall individual winners both came from Seattle's Jet City Tri, as Kathleen Brush totaled 6,382 miles as the top female, and David Bowne racked up 10,019.19 as the top male competitor. Jet City Tri was the top Division IV club and also claimed the elliptical division title.
Brush also was the individual female elliptical champion with 2,317.27 weighted miles, while Team NRGY's Mark Silverstein was the individual male elliptical champion with 939.9 miles.
