Escape from Alcatraz organizers and USA Triathlon go to war over race entry

Posted Nov 20 2009 10:00pm

Have you ever been to Salzburg, Austria?

You know...where the movie the Sound of Music was filmed.

If you happen to go to that scenic Austrian town you' ll quickly notice that it offers two Sound of Music tours to tourists:

1) The "Original" Sound of Music Tour and...

2) The Sound of Music Tour.

This same situation seems to be in the works in San Francisco for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

Today USA Triathlon sent out an email with the heading " Early Entry for 2010 Alcatraz Triathlon "

The email contained the following message:

" USA Triathlon is pleased to offer its members an exclusive opportunity to enter the 2010 Tri-California Events ALCATRAZ TRIATHLON before general registration opens on Black Friday, November 27. The event will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2010 in San Francisco, Calif. All out-of-state registrations receive an automatic $10 discount. A very limited number of early entry spots are now available ONLY to USAT members "

Escape It didn' t take long for the "Original" Escape from Alcatraz race organizers to put up this message on their web site:

" ATTENTION! If you received an email today from USA Triathlon announcing registration for an "Alcatraz Race," this is NOT the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

This is a race that as been designed by TriCalifornia to intentionally deceive you into believing it is the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and paying money to their company TriCalifornia is in no way affiliated with the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

The lottery for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will open here on this Official Event Website on December 1, 2009. Thank you, Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Event Staff "

And it didn' t take long for Terry Davis, the owner of Tri-California (the race organizer for the Alcatraz Triathlon) to respond:

" We' re not trying to deceive anybody. We want to promote our race, the Alcatraz Triathlon, on August 29. I' m disappointed by what they [Escape from Alcatraz] said. We just want to focus on putting on a qualify event as part of the Tri-California Series."

For the background story to this growing controversy click HERE. To make matters even more interesting there is also a third Escape from Alcatraz race scheduled for next year.

So as the situation now stands you now have three ways to Escape from Alcatraz next year:

1) The "original" Escape from Alcatraz

2) The Alcatraz Triathlon or

3) Alcatraz XXX Triathlon
