Enough with the sedentary lifestyles: Report finds that Canadians need to exercises more

Posted Jan 21 2011 3:10pm

It seems that like much of the rest of the developed world Canadians are stuck in a sedentary lifestyles.

A new report issued this week in Canada finds that not even two out of every 10 Canadians meet the most up-to-date guidelines for physical activity.

That's right, like much of the rest of the developed world Canadians are not exercising enough and are getting more sedate and even unhealthy because of it.

"More Albertans need to be more physically active on a regular basis," said Dr. Tanya Berry, survey co-author and research associate at the center, "especially in the face of the current chronic disease statistics and today's increasingly sedentary lifestyles."

According to the Calgary Harald :
"The Canadian Health Measures Survey found just 15 per cent of adults are meeting the latest proposed national guidelines averaging 2 ½ hours per week of moderate to vigorous activity. For children, just seven per cent are achieving the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's benchmark of at least one hour of activity per day.

Regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, some types of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, depression, stress and anxiety," StatsCan says in its report done between 2007 and 2009. The measures included Canadians between the ages of six and 79."
