Drink too much cola and you can have have muscle problems

Posted May 30 2009 10:11pm

Cola This is one of those studies that seems pretty self evident, but it is worth reporting as many endurance athletes drink cola during long races such as an Ironman or a marathon.

Greek researchers conducted a recent study that suggests that if you drink too much cola you can end up with mild weakness to serious paralysis.

But here's the catch. The people they studied drank between 2 and (get this) 9 liters of cola a day.

Nine liters is about 2 gallons.

"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.

According to Yahoo Health:

"In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions."
