Do you want fit kids...get fit before getting pregnant a new study concludes

Researchers working in Germany have concluded that women who are fit are more likely to have fit kids.
Or to put it another way Dr. Howard Zisser, of the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute in
Santa Barbara concludes that, "The advice here is it's best to be at an optimal weight before getting
pregnant. From the study, it appears that the women who were overweight
during pregnancy tended to have overweight babies and overweight
The study, performed by the Technical University of Munich, Germany,
and appearing in the journal Diabetes Care, also found children whose
mothers developed diabetes while pregnant had a greater chance of being
overweight by age eleven.
"The best advice is to get lean and fit before
you get pregnant," added Dr. Lois Jovanovic also of the Sansum Diabetes Research
Institute in Santa Barbara, California.
The new German Study involved 1,420 children born between 1989 and 2000 and according to Reuters :
"The researchers found that mother's weight
early in pregnancy was the strongest predictor of her child's overweight
status and resulting insulin resistance.
age 2, 8 and 11, far more children of obese mothers were overweight
than children of non-obese moms, the researchers report in the journal
Diabetes Care. At age 11, for example, 46 percent of children of obese
moms were overweight compared with 12 percent of children of non-obese
Nearly a third (31 percent)
of the children born to women with gestational diabetes were overweight
by age 11 compared to less than 16 percent of the children of
non-diabetic moms and moms with type 1 diabetes."
