An estimated 18,000 participants took on the 32 annual Detroit Free Press Marathon today in a chilly morning start with chilly temperatures hovering at just about 32 degrees at the start of the race.
2:20.23 minutes after the gun marked the beginning of the race---28-year-old Nick Stanko was the first man to cross the finish line.
He was closely followed by 2nd-place finisher Chad Johnson.
In the women' s race it was 41-year-old Sarah Plaxton who finished her 52nd marathon with a victory.
On potentially yet another tragic note, a man collapsed at the finish of the half marathon.
"The on-site medical team worked to perform CPR on the man in the middle of Fort Street before he was taken away in an ambulance," according to the Detroit Free Press.
While there is no world yet on the condition of the runner, this could mark another potential tragedy in a year that has seen an unusual number of deaths at marathons all around this country such as the death of a 23-year-old runner at the Baltimore Marathon last week and two runner deaths at the recent Rock ' n' Roll Half Marathon in San Jose.
