At 42-years of age Darra Torres is no stranger to Swimming World Championships so it came as little surprise that the Olympic champ was in the finals of the 50-meter freestyle final on Sunday in Rome.
To help get into the finals Torres switched from her older Speedo Racer swimsuit to one of the newer high tech swimsuits.
After the gun sounded and the some 24 seconds later, Torres finished 0.75 seconds behind winner Britta Steffen in the 50
meter freestyle race. The German swimmer had set a new world record of 23.73 seconds and Torres finished eighth the race and thus eight in the world this year.
"I like to win but I' m eighth fastest in the world at 42, so I can' t be too disappointed," she said.
Last year in Beijing Torres had won the Silver medal in the same race.
"I know people expected a little more after getting silver last year,"
she said. "But I gave it the best I could under these conditions and
they' ll have to be happy with eighth fastest in the world."
