Chrissie Wellington wins 2009 Kona Ironman World Championship triathlon in record time

Posted Oct 10 2009 10:00pm

Chrissie
It was spectacular three-peat victory for British triathlete and Ironman triathlon champion Chrissie Wellington as she rolled (literally) across the finish line and broke the long standing women's race record in a time of 8:54:02.

Wellington beat the old record of 8:55:28 set in 1992 by Paul Newby-Fraser's mark and even managed to finish 23rd overall in the process.

In winning the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship race she took home the first place prize of $110,000.

After the race the 32-year-old Wellington thanked the crowd in the traditional Hawaiian way.

"Mahalo," she said, using the Hawaiian word for "thank you."

The next women was behind Wellington was Australia's Mirinda Carfrae, and she was almost 20 minutes behind the British champ.
