Image what it must feel like to touch the wall in 1 minute, 53.08 seconds when swimming the 200 meter...especially when you touch the wall in a new world record.
But that' s exactly what Aaron Peirsol did when he smashed Olympic champion' s Ryan Lochte old record. Lochte, who owned the previous mark of 1:53.94 set in Beijing, finished second in 1:54.21.
The Californian sealed the deal and
clinched his place on the Rome bound World Championship U.S. team in
Indiana for a second time when he set a new world record in the 200 meter backstroke. Earlier in the week when he set the 100 meter backstroke record.
"Right after the 65-meter mark, I was able to hold on pretty well,"
Peirsol said. "These guys don' t fade, so I had to stay ahead of them
the whole way. It felt pretty good, and it was a wonderful swim. This
is just a stepping stone for two weeks. Lochte will get a chance at it
again."
