Ambulance_lights A 33-year-old Milwaukee man died Sunday during the swim portion of the Pewaukee Triathlon in Wisconsin.

Daniel J. Murry was racing his first triathlon according to race director of the Pewaukee Triathlon when he began grabbing for a kayak.

Steve Peterson who was in a kayak during the race dove in and tried to save him. "He just went down," Peterson said. "I got out of my kayak -- dove off the front end."

"I couldn' t find him at first. I duck-dived down and found him with my foot off the bottom -- pushed him up. Once we got him up, the lifeguard and I assisted the Pewaukee Fire Department in getting the gentleman into the boat," Peterson added.

Lifeguards attempted to revive Murry with CPR but were unsuccessful in their attempts.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
