2010 Ironman Japan cancelled due to outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (no seriously)

June 1, 2010 Ironman Japan, slated to take place on June 13, 2010 in Goto-Fukue,
Nagasaki, is cancelled. As of yesterday - May 31 - action by the Goto
government was implemented due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease
in the southern islands of Japan.
World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) licenses the Ironman Japan event to
Universal Sports Marketing, a Japanese company. As the licensor, WTC was
not directly involved in the conversations and communications between
Goto Island authorities and the race organizers. WTC must accept the
conclusion reached by the local authorities that the conduct of the race
would threaten the community’s vital agricultural industry and abide by
the decision to cancel the race.
WTC is currently working on a
variety of options to provide event alternatives to those athletes
registered for Ironman Japan.
More details will be forthcoming via
email updates and information will also be posted to Ironman.com
