Have you seen this commercial? by Tamar F. Posted in: Questions & Answers in Healthy Eating Have you seen the Hungry Man commercials? I am disgusted. It shows a man drinking a smoothy for lunch and then, a voiceover of, "You are what you eat." Then, after some other things (like a bunch of men going to the bathroom), another man calls out, "Ladies!". Like, someone having a healthy smoothie for lunch is effeminate. Listen, I have no pro... This is what Denise Richards says... by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Weight loss Denise Richards (movie star, ex of Charlie Sheen and Richie Sambora) says that she doesn't discuss weight loss in front of her daughters. She doesn't want them to get body issues. She does say that she works out "nearly every day" in her workout room at home and that the girls play in there, so they learn by example. She says that working out is... Read on »
It does work! by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Walking Since the weather here has gotten moderately better, I have been walking a little bit more. I haven't lost much weight, but my clothes are really fitting better and I am not as out of breath as I used to be. It's a subtle change, but I see it and I'm pleased. A confidence builder! Read on »
A vegan chef by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Vegan World famous chef Charlie Trotter has many restaurants, mostly based in Chicago. He even has a bread pudding recipe made with banana bread and white chocolate that I want to try. He was at the forefront of Chicago getting rid of fois gras in its restaurants. He is a vegan. The one problem I have is that he's not really walking the walk, by still ... Read on »
The refreshing NO! by Tamar F. 3 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Mind-Body I worked with someone for a year that I joke about "took a year from my life!" I learned a lot that year, so I don't really feel like a year was stolen...BUT, that person was definitely toxic. It was time to move on. The person recently emailed me for us to work together again. I briefly considered the money I would make, until a friend interven... Read on »
Get rid of the yeast by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Healthy Eating According to Essential Health, both men and women can get yeast infections. However, diet can help prevent it. It says that you should eliminate sugar from your meals, as well as white flour. Also, drink fresh green juice instead of fruit juice. EWWW, parasites! by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Healthy Eating I picked up a pamphlet from a health food store in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. It said that more than 2 BILLION people are infected with parasites world-wide! It also mentioned that there are foods and nutraceuticals that can help fight them, such as garlic, black walnut hulls, orange peel, pumpkin seeds, rosemary and thyme. The pamphlet al... Read on »
Fast Food You Can Feel Good About by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Organic Food The Mexican chain, Chipotles, prides itself on its philosophy of "food with integrity" - meaning unprocessed, seasonal, family-farmed, naturally raised, hormone-free and organic. It was recently featured in an article about eating lunch on the cheap in these hard times. Business people are able to have decent meeting lunches there for less than $... Read on »
Sexy Veganism? by Tamar F. Posted in: Questions & Answers in Vegan The New York Times has reported on a development in Portland, Oregon. There is a "Casa Diablo Gentlemen's Club" that is, well, a vegan strip club. No fur, silk, leather or feathers is to be worn by the dancers and the cuisine is vegan. The controversy is between the feminists and post feminists (Suicide Grrrls, Vegan Vixens, PETA), over whether ... Read on »
Keeping an eye on my friend... by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Walking It's getting warmer where I live and I have been walking some more with my dog, Mr. Jefferson. I got him from the pound a few years ago. They said he was 5, I think he was more like 3. I think he's 7 now, but he might be older. He has been getting very sleepy after walks and also, he stalls on walks, the way my elderly dad used to..."Hey! Did yo... Read on »

Watch out for your little buddy when walking... by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Walking It was unseasonably warm here yesterday. I had been walking for a few weeks, getting to work. But my puppy had not been on a long walk for a while. He seemed happy enough to stretch his legs, but he may have pulled something, because he's been very quiet and mopey. I have wrapped him up in a blankie and I'm not doing my usual routine of flipping... Read on »
Ayurvedic time to walk by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Walking I've been reading a newspaper called Health Quest and it discusses that with the 3 Ayurvedic doshas, Spring is "Kapha". With Kapha weather out, and the gradual renewal of many of us out of hiberantion, walking is the perfect exercise for this time of year. The article says it gets us out and about, smellling the elements. It suggests even a walk... Read on »
Vitamin D by Tamar F. 2 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Vitamins & Supplements I've just been reading in Taste for Life that Vitamin D is important for combatting depression. The Seasonal Affectation Disorder that you get is not merely because you aren't seeing light -- it's because the sun supplies Vitamin D. It's considered healthy to be in the outdoor sun for 10-15 minutes a day. Read on »
I hate the sizism in walking outfits by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Walking I hate the way BlissWorld.com, where I can get shoes and lotions, only has walking outfits in little girl sizes. Oh, they may say they carry "Large" (and they NEVER say XL), but trust me, those aren't Target or Newport-News size large. They say the average size of women in the U.S. is 14, but that catalogue seems to be for women who "already rea... Read on »
Hepburn's Orchard store by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Vegetarian You know how so many of those little farm stands are nothing but a lean- to on the road, open only when they feel like it? Hard to plan meals around a place that never seems to be open. This is not the case with Hepburn's, a wonderful farm store in Hancock, Maryland, right on the West Virginia line. They are even open on Sundays. The place alway... Read on »
Breaking out the Spring with a little walking by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Walking It's been hard to walk here in Baltimore, what with the ice patches and snow. But last week, I dug out some little comfy Keds and walked part of the C & O (Chesapeake and Ohio) rail trail. It felt great! I love rail trails, because they are level and flat, safe to walk. What a wonderful re-purposing of old train tracks. Read on »
A watery weekend! by Tamar F. Posted in: General Discussion in Healthy Eating Last weekend, I served as the judge of the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Fest, the oldest such contest in the world. I drank over 100 waters! Then, since I mismarked part of my ballot, I had to re-drink some of the waters... whew! They are now saying someone my height/weight should drink 14 cups of water a day! That would be good ... Read on »
Visit a spa town! by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Massage/Spa Do you like the idea of a spa getaway, but don’t like the idea of spending thousands, or of only “being good” within what amounts to an upscale prison? Wouldn’t you rather stay at a whole town that’s about wellness? I recently stayed at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, one of this country’s first “spa towns”. They are lucky in that their sweet m... Sophia Loren and walking by Tamar F. 1 Comments Posted in: General Discussion in Walking In “The Little Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets”, it says not to “kill yourself” after the age of 40 in the gym and instead, be like Sophia Loren. She says she walks an hour a day to keep up that renowned figure of hers. She also lives in a hilly area of Italy, which no doubt adds to her strength training. Read on »
