What length of a board should I look at as a beginner who wants to get good?

Depends on Your Height. You should get a longer board in a range of 8-9 feet, maybe a little longer if you are a big guy, either a longboard or a funboard. Don't make the mistake of trying to learn on a shortboard. The longer board will give you more stability and it will be easier to catch a wave. Once you get comfortable on a longboard then you can move down to shorter boards. A good surf shop will recommend a decent board for your height. I am 5'8" and started out on an 8 1/2 foot board. I now ride a 7 1/2 foot funboard. I have no interested in going down to a shortboard, but then, I started late and I never got that good. :-)
