You should start out at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. It is great for beginners. You may want to stay towards the south side of the beach (just south of Taco Bell).
If you can go during weekdays, it is less crowded. Saturday and Sunday afternoon there are a lot of surfers in the water.
Good luck and enjoy the surf.
Another good spot for beginners is "The Jetty" in Half Moon Bay. Again you may want to stay on the far south end of the beach to avoid the pros.
If you happen to be in Santa Cruz, check out "Cowells". It is another good spot for beginners.
Good Luck,
Chris

Hello surfers! So I recently got the surfing bug over New Years in Costa Rica. Apart from a week of lessons there, and having just bought a wetsuit to pursue the activity, I'm a complete newbie. Any recommendations of the best spots around San Francisco for me to practice surfing? I'd love to know which beaches (including part of beach... don't want to get in the way of the pros...), time of day, etc... Thanks!
