Organize While Watching Old Television Shows

Posted by Stephanie B.

I have had a big organizing project to go through recently. It involves a lot of paper and a lot of pain. The best way I found to get through it was to pop in a DVD of an old TV show...of all things, The Waltons, which I have not watched since I was a little girl. The show is easy on the mind and does not require a lot of heavy thinking. Its inspirational feel good message keeps the filing project from getting too depressing, and the linear storyline is simple to follow while multitasking. While you might watch any kind of television while you file, many newer shows tend to have more complex plotlines, which is why I prefer the oldies but goodies.

The common theme with getting through something that is considered boring is putting your mind on something else while you're doing it. I have a friend who is excellent at keeping in touch with people because she literally carries note (novelty) cards with her wherever she goes. The moment something is slightly boring to her, she'll give it half her focus and use the other half to write a note to people (I still haven't figured out how she manages to do this without being offensive). However, she is one of the most efficient people I know, and I'm starting to realize that people who are most efficient are the ones who stretch the hours that are in the day. I often put off a task like, say, cleaning and organizing that kitchen drawer, in favor of watching a rerun of Studio 60. But I vow to be better - I will pull that kitchen drawer out, march it to the tv room and BE MORE PRODUCTIVE!!! Hooray!
Movies or music. Yep, either is great for me to have on in the background while I'm doing certain paperwork or computer tasks. They help keep the peppiness level up and decrease the feeling that you're doing a chore. The volume goes down or the type of music changes if I need to write or do certain cognitive tasks; for these, I get distracted by words so I'll listen to jazz, classical or something else non-verbal. Other times I just like the quiet. Whatever works at the time.

I tend to leave the television on a channel that can hold my attention when I'm cleaning and organizing, something like HGTV that gives me ideas for around the house just by looking at the screen for a few seconds.

I think half-hour long shows are perfect for when you're working out-as are news shows where you can begin and stop as you please.
