Lesson: Food as Reward // Incident: Family Stress

Posted May 02 2008 11:02am
Today I felt great. I reset my thinking and was able to be very effective with my clients. I am excited to be almost finished with my 101 Ways to Lose Weight and Keep it Off article - which I will post soon.

Today's Lesson:
Through my years as a coach I am still amazed at how people treat food. For many it is an embedded reward system (watch out parents how you reward your children!). If you thinking is - "I had a hard day at work so I will reward myself with a donut". Now you associate a hard day with a donut and begin to crave donuts when you feel tired after work...nice! Bad habits can be developed so easily ... but the good news is - so can good habits. You just need to turn the bad habits around and reinforce the good behaviors. That is where positive thinking comes in and working with your subconscious programming. I have lists on this site a list of powerful tools to help you to work on your thinking... I will continue to add more.

Today's Incident:
A woman came in today stressed from her child - who has been deemed "special". He got into a bad situation that had him almost killed and is causing her pain and embarrassment from what he did accidentally. She said that when she is stressed from his incidents she cries and eats.

Action:
There are two ways to look at her situation. Yes, it is stressful and can be embarrassing for her - BUT - this is HER situation and this is HER son - so a healthier view for her - is to accept and love the situation she is in. Look at her son as a special gift in her life. He is unique and is there for a reason. If she does not open up to it, if she chooses to resist it, to hate it, she may never learn what she needs to learn and receive the gifts he is here to give her. I told her to write positive affirmations about her life and her son and to read them whenever she is bombarded with the stresses from his teachers, etc. This way she will remind herself of her special gift and learn to appreciate him and love him more genuinely. The idea is to reduce the stress levels so she won't destroy her body by binging and learn to love her life for what it is and quit trying to struggle to change it.

Working on your thinking and learning how to turn it around is powerful. If you can learn these tools you can do or change anything in your life. One powerful video on-line is called The Secret Movie. Watch it and see what I mean.
