How to Recognize Energy Vampires

Posted by Nirmala N.

Something I've discovered about how to stay healthy and feel good about myself is that it's imperative to surround yourself with people who are positive influences. I used to think it was more a matter of being around like-minded people, but I've actually realized that people with diverse, disparate opinions and beliefs can add rich perspectives to my life. Mainly, it's about learning to ward off the energy vampires. Here are some warning signals that enable you to spot the energy vampire from a mile away:

1) They tend to thrive on drama and always have a "story" to tell you.

2) They put you down or try to minimize your accomplishments.

3) They expect you to "save" them so much that they can't reciprocate.

4) They are flakey, unreliable, and forget your big occasions--but they always expect you to be there for them.

5) Complaining is their pastime.

6) They constantly seek empathy and affirmation.

7) They tend to dwell on the negatives.

8) They sulk or get defensive if you don't take their "side" or give them constructive criticism.

To me, one of the obvious secrets to a successful, happy life is making sure that you are around people who affirm your goals and existence without taking on a "savior" role, people who will be honest with you while still essentially supporting you and making you aware of your potential, people who won't stand by idly as you continually wallow in your sorrow. I'm grateful to all the friends I have who fulfill this role, and luckily, I've learned to stay far, far away from those who do not.

...many healers believe that some people literally are "energy vampires." This means that they hook into your life force energy and literally drain it from you. If you feel tired and drained just by being around a person, they may be one of those "energy vampires."
