Bringing Nature to your Doorstep

Posted by Patricia S.

If monarch butterflies bring joy to your heart and scrub jays bring smiles to your face, you can create your own backyard wildlife habitat. The National Wildlife Federation (www.nwf.org/bwh) offers certification to nature lovers everywhere. Guidelines for planning and planting your habitat are available on the website or purchase "Attracting Birds, Butterflies and Other Backyard Wildlife," a publication of NWF. Requirements for certification include planting food for wildlife (berries, seeds, nuts and fruits), providing feeders (hummingbird, butterfly or squirrel), providing water (birdbath, pond or puddling area) and providing cover (roosting box, evergreens or rock piles). Size doesn't matter. Whether you have 10 acres of rolling hills or a peanut-sized apartment backyard, providing the essential elements is what's important. Once you've achieved the wildlife habitat of your dreams, send in your information to NWF and you'll receive a certificate handsome enough to frame and display. If experiencing nature is your path to the purposeful, balanced life, start planning your backyard wildlife habitat today.
