Do you tend to keep feelings bottled up? Here’s another reason to uncork yourself: A new study shows that women who keep quiet in marital arguments have a higher risk of irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and even death. Yikes. Whether you’re married, in a committed relationship, or single, it’s important for your emotional and physical health to acknowledge and express your feelings. You’ll feel better about yourself, reduce stress, and possibly save yourself some intestinal troubles to boot.
I posted recently about how feelings of depression, for me, often give rise to digestive problems. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that I hate to rock the boat. I'm not exactly passive, but for years, I was so afraid of the prospect of confrontation that I always tended to be the "peacemaker" even if I was feeling all heated next time.
I think the hardest part for me was learning that you can express your feelings without fearing they'll lead to an argument or hurt someone else. It's a matter of being diplomatic and taking responsibility for caring for yourself and speaking your truth.
