They don't call it beauty sleep for nothing. Experts say people who fail to get seven to eight hours of sleep per night are taxing their immune systems, which can make them susceptible to sickness and premature aging.
"Folks who have a sleep deficit tend to have poor memories, short attention spans, less energy and impaired problem-solving abilities," said Skye Wesley, M.D., a licensed psychiatrist. "What's more, it just gets worse the older you are."
Sleep is also integral to lowering stress levels, further decelerating the aging process, Wesley said.
