How to Beat Your Fear Monsters and Step into the Unknown

When you need to learn something new, when you have to risk to step out of your comfort zone or explore new territory, what is your first response? Most people freeze.
Risking to go and grow being the past - moving from the known to the unknown – is something every living creature must deal with on a daily basis. Some deal with it better than others. Humans add emotion to it in the form of fear and it stops us every time. Some for a second, some for a lifetime.
WHAT ARE WE AFRAID OF?
What are we afraid of? Let’s list some reasons. Fear of…
making a mistake
getting in trouble
losing what they already have by jumping into the unknown
It’s a paralysis really, isn’t it? You know what to do, but just can’t step into it. Sadly, you can even tell others what to do! . . . but, you just can’t take action for yourself.
IS THE UNKOWN TOO BIG?
Sometimes our fear monsters feel huge!
We often have the thought that what we don’t know, what we just can’t see or “get” right now is too big for us. We can’t handle it, so why start and fail?
Actually, nothing’s too big for us, it’s just new.
Usually, when the pain of where we are, and “what is”, is too much to bear, we will take the leap, even if it’s in small steps.
Pain. That’s what. Lots and lots of feelings of being lost, wandering aimlessly through life knowing that “if I just did “it” this would change”, regret and worst of all, lost time and opportunity.
DO “IT”! JUST START
No matter if your monster is losing weight, or losing “wait”, changing jobs, dating again or for the first time, going back to school, buying a property, finishing a project or making a sales call–do it.
As Steve Jobs said, “You’re already naked, so there is no reason why you don’t follow your heart.”
And, like I’ve been saying for several decades now… Life’s short! Get out of your own way and do something. Anything. Just start!
The monster isn’t all that big really. Remember that diving board when you were a kid?! Take a big breath and jump!
In fact, once you start taking action, you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t. There’s a natural energy flow that begins soon after starting. You will gain clarity about what you should be doing. You’ll see the next step and the next. Keep stepping into it. Keep opening and stepping through doors.
Nothing is ever solved, or created, by standing still. Movement is the process of the Universe. So move. Do something. Anything. But do not stand still. Do not fence sit. Put your foot down on one side or the other, swing the opposite leg over and start walking. You’ll know before you take ten steps if you’re going in the right direction.
