Breast Implants Connected to Suicide Risk

Posted by Nirmala N.

According to researchers, women who undergo cosmetic breast augmentation surgeries are three times more likely to commit suicide than those who don’t. Scientists at the International Epidemiology Institute in Maryland say that their study is one of five international studies that has consistently demonstrated an increased suicide risk among women with breast implants. The study tracked outcomes among 3,500 Swedish women who underwent breast implant surgery between 1965 and 1993. The follow-up period, which took 19 years, revealed a markedly high suicide rate in comparison with the general population. The risk was seven times higher for women who got their implants at age 45 or older. The risk tends to emerge about 10 years or more after women receive implants. While the breast implant itself may not lead to increased suicide risk, researchers posit that women who feel the need to get breast implants may be more likely to have psychiatric problems that lead to suicide.

In 2006, breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery performed in the nation, with about 329,000 procedures undergone.

I've seen plenty of women base their entire sense of self-esteem and worth on male attention. But once these women get older, no amount of breast augmentation can return them to the attention they received as younger women. I even know women who by their mid-30s haven't learned how to take care of their basic needs (rent/food) without male support. What happens when these women get older and the man leaves or dies?
