Antidepressants Linked to Bone Loss

Posted by Nirmala N.

Those looking to get rid of stress and depression, take note... according to researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, the class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can be hazardous to your health. SSRIs are connected to increasing rates of bone loss; they account for two-thirds of antidepressant prescriptions in the nation (e.g, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and others). The study involved over 2,000 older women and involved the study of bone mineral density (an indicator of osteoporosis). SSRI users apparently had a higher rate of bone loss in the group. Althoug the work needs to be confirmed in other populations, according to researchers, it has been shown that depression itself is linked to increased rates of bone loss, too.
