Side effects associated with synthetic antidepressants range from aggravating ones, such as constipation and cotton mouth, to more serious problems such as impotence, irregular heartrhythm, and extrapyramidal effects like tardive dyskinesia, a permanent and potentially fatal movement disorder. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have more limited side effects than the other categories of antidepressants, including nausea, insomnia, headache, and abnormal weight loss or gain. They are by no means as safe as they are made out to be and doctors undoubtedly over-prescribe these physically addictive drugs.(Antidepressants are not addictive in the traditional sense but can cause disturbing withdrawal symptoms when rapidly discontinued.)Psychiatric medications do nothing to correct the CAUSES of mental problems, they merely suppress symptoms while on them.Quit taking your meds and you’ll be right back where you started. Some safer herbal alternatives include St. John’s Wort, 5-HTP, L-Tryptophan, Essential Fatty Acids, SAMe, and Panax Ginseng. Each of these treatments works in different ways to achieve the same effects.St. John’s Wort can have potentially dangerous synergistic effects when mixed with other drugs, as it inhibits MAO in the body.
The original post is correct in saying that Sam-E, 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan all help with depression, but what is important to know is that any one of these on their OWN will most likely only make the problem worse.
For instance, 5-HTP increases Serotonin levels, but in the process it will DEPLETE dopamine levels causing further problems.
It is important that BOTH dopamine and serotonin levels be IN BALANCE in order to work properly and effectively.
There are protocols that some practitioners use that BALANCE these by using 5 htp in combination with tyrosine, folic acid, b6 and cysteine. These protocols are achieving close to 100% success rates for depression and other neurotransmitter related disorders. This is NOT fiction, this is FACT and it works.
I have been on what seems like every antidepressant out there. The worse one for me was Paxil which sent me into a manic mode that I could not escape, suicidal ideation through the roof and a self harm problem that exploded. Ended up on a psych ward for a couple of months after the introduction of that med.
