Not being able to sleep after a long day can be the most frustrating feeling. However you don't have to lay awake all night long thanks to these three easy tips toward getting quality shut eye!
1) Focus internally - Clear your mind of the day's stresses by closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing. Take the time to feel yourself laying still, hearing your regular breathes and relaxing your limbs as much as possible. Doing this will naturally slow your heart rate and get your mind off of turbo mode it is forced to be on all day long at work or school.
2) Have a midnight snack - Yes, it's true that snacking before bedtime actually can be good for you! As long as you don't consume sugar or caffeine, a simple snack of something simple or salty can get your metabolism going (great weight loss bonus!) and calm your system for sleep. Think of it as a miniature version of the famous post-Thanksgiving dinner nap.
3) Check your bed situation - are your pillows causing you discomfort? Are your sheets scratchy? Mattress need to be flipped? Simple things such as these can lead to fitful sleep or a general feeling of being "unrested" in the morning. Treat your bed just like you would the rest of your house - a place you should value since you spend a lot of time there!
These are just a few of the things you can do to relax your body and mind, stay healthy, and get the awesome shut eye you deserve.
I'd like to add...do what you can to mask outside sounds if they bother you. You can get a white noise machine or just use a fan. I've spent most of my adult life in multi-unit dwellings and not single family homes, and making sure I'm not disturbed by the neighbors is key for me.
