Targeting Lower Abs?

Posted by Taylor N.

So I've been focusing a lot of core strength training and improving my core and cardio fitness, since those seem to be pretty crucial in many activities and to overall fitness. I've done a lot of different exercises and have definitely improved my core strength, but have notices that my lower abdominal muscles and obliques are not nearly as strong or toned. I was wondering if anyone knew of any particularly good exercises to target your lower abdominal and oblique muscles. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Taylor,

Well first of all, I think that it's great that you are targeting your core. We use it for everything. I believe that there is a great importance in knowing a little about the anatomy first. I try to get all of my clients to think this way as well, because it enriches your understanding, and will definitely help in your approach. By and large, there is no such thing as "lower abdominals". The Rectus Abdominus is what people see and think of when they say "abs". It is a sheet of muscle seperated by the aponeurosis (a tenusous connective tissue). This connective tissue helps to create a six pack. When you are looking at some well developed abdominals you are see division because of this tissue. So, if you understand that it is just one muscle, then you'll also come to understand that it has to be treated with more attention. Aside from these facts, the abdominals are located over a cavity (abdominal cavity), as opposed to a joint like most muscles. This means that when you work your the lower portion of your abs, then you need more leverage. So, if the lower portion of your abs is the fulcrum, then a good thing to do would be to increase the load end by extending the legs. The TRX is one of my favorite pieces of equipment, that can effectively help you with this. I hope this was helpful, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Thanks.
